Pleasant Stone Devotional Meditation: December 9

“Ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people: that ye should show forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light” ~ 1 Peter 2:9

No matter who you are, if your faith is in Jesus Christ, this brilliant “many-colored pleasant stone” is yours. It is mine [Eugenia Price, the authors] too, for the very same, simple reason that it is yours. We who belong to Christ, are a “chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people.”

Peculiar among our fellow human beings whose lives have not yet been invaded by the life of God in Christ. Webster’s definition of the word “peculiar” is this: Belonging to an individual; privately owned; not common.

We are not to be peculiar in the sense that we call attention to ourselves. We are peculiar in that we belong to Jesus Christ and no longer to ourselves. Anyone still outside of Christ belongs to himself. A man can retain self-ownership and follow any other religion. But we are to be “privately owned,” if we are Christians. The private possessions of no-one in heaven or on earth, but Jesus Christ. He shares us lovingly. But we are not able to divide ourselves. We are to be His. The common thing is to own oneself. We are to be “not common” in this sense at all. We have been “bought with a price.”

And we are to be a “chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, of peculiar people” (privately owned by Christ) so that we can “show forth the praises of him who hath called [us] out of darkness into his marvelous light.”

“I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness … for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whiter he goeth.”
