Pleasant Stone Devotional Meditation: October 9

“Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it…” ~ Song of Solomon 8:7a

Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.”

Our “green stone” verse above catches flame in the fact that God is from “everlasting to everlasting” and that this God is love. And this God is in us.

In us, gently, firmly, relentlessly pressing us to love Him in return. Christ will never stop urging us to respond to His love. He cannot. He is love. And He is “from everlasting to everlasting.” We only hold back our own enjoyment of the quality of the life He died to give us when we refuse to respond to Him. “Many waters cannot quench [His] love” because He is that love and He is in us. “Neither can the floods drown it” because He has promised that He will never leave nor forsake us. “Lo, I am with you always.” Jesus Christ is love. He cannot be drowned! He is alive forever now. And as we open ourselves to this everlasting love which for all eternity will be calling us closer, we will find response becomes natural to us as breathing. But the habit must be formed of remembering that He is in us. It is His presence the knowledge that He is never going away again. We can grieve Him, by refusing to accept each thing that comes as from His lovely hand. The choice is ours. We can complain about the hardships which are not of “our making.” Or we can respond with joy to the One who will use them for our remaking.

“God is love … I and the Father are one … I am he that liveth and was dead, and am alive for evermore. … Abide in me, and I in you.”
