Pleasant Stone Devotional Meditation: September 4

“… The beloved of the Lord shall dwell in safety by him; and the Lord shall cover him all the day long, and he [the beloved of the Lord] shall dwell between his shoulders.” ~ Deuteronomy 33:12

Just a few days ago we finished sharing my [Eugenia Price, the author’s] “pleasant purple stones” in which we saw some of the great wonder of God’s minute by minute tenderness toward us in times of our great weeping.

Here is a “green stone” verse whose meaning points toward the reason God can give us peace even during the hours of great weeping and pain and heartbreak. He can do this because He is always with us. God’s peace and comfort and strength in time of trouble are not gifts from God, given out as we give gifts. They are God Himself. We are peaceful because He is with us and He is peace. “The beloved of the Lord shall dwell in safety by him …” Because He is there by us. “… the Lord shall cover him all day long” because the Lord is there available to cover him.

“… and he, [the beloved of the Lord – you and I] shall dwell between his shoulders.” What a cause for singing! This verse could be no other place but among our “green stones” because green does sing and surely this is the secret behind how God has been able to “put a new song” in our hearts. The cause for the “song” is the glory-filled realization that God has worked out a way in Christ so that we, who were once so “far off”, can “dwell between his shoulders.”

“And even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even will I carry, and I will deliver you.”
