Pleasant Stone Devotional Meditation: September 25

“What is thy beloved more than another beloved, O thou fairest among women? What is thy beloved more than another beloved, that thou dost so charge us?” ~ Song of Solomon

We have been running here and there in search of our Beloved. Now as the woman in the Song of Solomon, we have run up to the first people we see and in our desperation to find Him, we cry, “I charge you, O daughters of Jerusalem, if ye find my beloved, that ye tell him, … I am sick of love.”

I [Eugenia Price, the author] can well imagine that the “daughters of Jerusalem” in your life or mine, might raise vaguely quizzical eyebrows as they look us over somewhat pityingly. We blurt it out again: “I charge you … if ye find my beloved, tell him … I am sick of love.”

We have annoyed them into answering now. They know we’re ‘religious fanatics,” but here is a chance to back us up against the wall with a question they’re sure we won’t be able to answer! After all, we left their world “outside” and turned to Christ. Have we come back? Did we not find what we were looking for? They looked us up and down. They seem quite controlled. We are out of breath and nervous and somehow embarrassed. They give us a minute to grow more ill at ease and then one of them asks: “What is thy beloved more than another beloved? We don’t answer right away and she repeats her question, laughing now: “What is thy beloved more than another beloved, that thou dost so charge us?”

Here is a question everyone outside of Christ has a right to ask. If it forces us to find the answer, then this is a “green stone” verse about which to rejoice. What is your answer? Why Jesus Christ above any other? Jesus asked it Himself.

“The voice of my beloved! … Whom say ye that I am?”
