Pleasant Stone Devotional Meditation: September 18

“Come with me from Lebanon, my spouse, with me from Lebanon; look from the top of Amana, from the top of Shenir and Hermon” ~ Song of Solomon 4:8

It is well with our souls when we sit down “under his shadow with great delight.” When we finally are willing to delight ourselves only in God, we find that He does give us the desire of our hearts.

The true desires of our hearts. Because when we “delight in Him,” when we obey Him, He works minute by minute, as we obey, to change our desires back to what He intended them to be when He created us in the first place.

Then after He has changed our desires, we find that He gives us “the desires of our heart.” Now and then some of us have come a way through life which has put us “on the fringe” of the “multitude.” We look about and wonder how He is ever going to give us the desires of our hearts! Perhaps He can’t for many years, but ultimately He will. Ours is in one sense, “the better part,” because our suffering lasts longer and we more helplessly driven to His side. We know we have to stay there too or we are bereft.

This is cause for rejoicing! Anything that drives us to Jesus is cause for rejoicing. And so, when we do sit at His banqueting table, we find His fruit sweet, His bread and water eternally satisfying and His banner love. But, our Beloved does not leave us sitting there growing fat and dull. We hear the voice of our Beloved again, calling us to come on up a little higher. Stirring us up to leap and skip about the mountain with Him. We may stumble all the way up Amana, we may weep all the way up Shenir and Hermon, but He is up there calling and we know we will ultimately have to follow.

“Come with me from Lebanon my spouse … come away.”
