Pleasant Stone Devotional Meditation: November 9

“Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins and clothed them” ~ Genesis 3:21

God warned Adam and Eve. God warned us. But as with the couple in the garden, we “take over” and ignore God’s warning. He attempts to convince us in every way possible that He has formed things a certain way. If we obey, we live in peace. If we disobey and ignore His warnings, we reap the consequences.

By nature, after the original self-assertion in the garden, we have no power to obey God. But not only has God provided this power in Christ, He began to show us His heart in the altogether gracious way in which He cared for Adam and Eve right there in their first shame!

God’s heart did not become like Jesus’ heart on the Cross during the hours Jesus hung there. God’s heart has always been that way. And here is tender proof of it.

Just minutes after He saw their disobedience, and heard their feeble explanations, He began to minister to them. He merely acted like Himself in the garden when, after clearly setting forth the inevitable consequences which would follow their sin, He began to serve them. God will always make the consequences of our sin plain to us. This is part of His nature too. Not the vindictive part as we so wrongly think. Rather a lovely proof of His fairness. He was not a vengeful God. He was a loving Father. He was like Jesus. He made coats for them to hide their shame. Caring as He still does, for human dignity and suffering. He acted like Jesus. They were One then, as they are now.

“… Then I was by him, as one brought up with him … I and the Father are One.”
